Tartans Sweep Season Series with Brandeis After 70-56 Victory

(PITTSBURGH, Pa.) - The Carnegie Mellon University women's basketball team evened its record at 10-10 for the year with a 70-56 home victory against Brandeis University on Sunday, February 9 in University Athletic Association (UAA) play. The Tartans are now 3-6 in the UAA and swept the series with Brandeis for the ninth time. The Judges are now 13-7 overall and 3-6 in the UAA.

The Tartans shot 53.3% from the floor including a 5-of-7 showing from long range in the first quarter to build a 22-13 advantage early. They pushed that to a 38-26 lead at halftime with senior Makayla Filiere ( Chandler, Ariz. / Hamilton) scoring seven of her game-high 19 points in the second quarter. Filiere's 19 points tied a season-high and she finished with three made baskets from behind the arc to move to fourth all-time in Tartans history.

The Tartans led by as many as 20 points in the third quarter and Brandeis could only pull to within 11 points in the fourth, as the Tartans shot 48.0% in the second half and 42.6% for the game.

After Filiere's 19 points came 14 from sophomore forward Caitlyn Clendenin (Bethesda, Md. / Bethesda Chevy Chase). Clendenin narrowly missed a double-double with nine rebounds while sophomore guard Leah Weslock (Howell, Mich. / Howell) recorded her third double-double of the season with 13 points and 10 rebounds. Both sophomores had four assists in the game while senior Megan Jaeb (San Jose, Calif. / Presentation) had a career-high five steals.

Camila Casanueva was 3-of-4 from behind the arc and led the Judges with 17 points. The Judges shot 35.7% from the floor and committed 19 turnovers that led to 17 points for the Tartans.

The Tartans next travel to the University of Chicago for a 6:00 p.m. CT contest on Friday, February 14 before facing Washington University in St. Louis on Sunday, February 16 at 2:00 p.m. CT.
