Tartans Fall to Third Ranked Team in UAA Play at #6 NYU

(BROOKLYN, N.Y.) – The Carnegie Mellon University women's basketball team faced its third nationally ranked opponent in University Athletic Association (UAA) play when they traveled to sixth-ranked New York University (NYU) on Friday, January 27. A slow first quarter for the Tartans led to an NYU lead that closed with a 77-52 home victory for the Violets who move to 13-2 overall and 3-2 in the UAA. The Tartans are now 9-8 overall and 0-6.

How it Happened

  • The Tartans couldn't find a shooting rhythm in the first quarter, only hitting 4-of-16 attempts from the floor while turning the ball over eight times.
  • The Violets shot 42.1% (8-of-19) in the first frame and stretched a 5-4 lead to 23-9 at the end of the frame.
  • Sophomore Catherine Or, the Tartans' leading scorer with 16.8 points per game, made her first basket of the game in the third quarter and finished with just two points.
  • The Tartans outrebounded the Violets by 11 for the game with 17 offensive boards but could only score eight second-chance points.

For the Tartans

  • Freshman Piper Ligotti recorded a team-high 12 points for her second straight game in double figures.
  • Freshman Savannah Gibbs and sophomore Anisha Chintala each scored nine points.
  • Or led the team with 11 rebounds for her eighth game this season with double-digit rebounds.

For the Violets

  • Natalie Bruns led with 16 points, 14 rebounds, and 10 blocks.
  • Jenny Walker and Erica Miller each scored 14 points and Belle Pellecchia scored 10.
