Tartans Stop Skid, Or Records Eighth Double-Double and UAA Record, in Win at Brandeis

(WALTHAM, Mass.) – Sophomore Catherine Or recorded the first 20-point, 20-rebound game of her career and the first for the Tartans since 2017, as the Carnegie Mellon University women's basketball team stopped a six-game skid with a 79-67 road win at Brandeis University in University Athletic Association (UAA) play. Or also set the UAA record for defensive rebounds in the game with 20 over her career-high 23 boards coming on the defensive end. The Tartans are now 10-8 overall and 1-6 in the UAA while Brandeis falls to 6-12 and 1-6.

How it Happened

  • Brandeis got out to an 18-7 lead in the first quarter before the Tartans ended the last two minutes of the frame with three layups by three different players to trail by five.
  • The Tartans' 6-0 run continued into the second quarter as the visitors scored the first six points to take a 19-18 lead with 8:04 showing on the clock.
  • There were four lead changes and two ties in the last eight minutes of the second quarter with the Tartans taking the final lead on a jump shot by sophomore Anisha Chintala following Or's 10th defensive rebound of the game and eighth of the quarter.
  • Or hit the team's second three-pointer of the half, and the quarter, with 32 seconds to go to put the Tartans up 37-32.
  • In the third quarter, the Tartans led by as many as nine points but the Judges pulled to within one at 49-48 with 1:53 to go before the Tartans closed the quarter with five straight to keep the lead.
  • The Tartans maintained the lead through the fourth quarter, leading by as many as 10 four times before the final score of 79-67 was reached on two free throws by Or with 26 seconds to go.
  • The Tartans hit 6-of-8 from the free throw line in the final 1:16 to secure the win.

For the Tartans

  • All five starters scored in double figures.
  • Or led with 22 points and 23 rebounds with five assists.
  • Freshman Savannah Gibbs finished with a career-tying 17 points and a career-high 12 rebounds for her second double-double of the season.
  • Chintala finished with 16 points after leading the team in the first half with 11 points.
  • Freshman Ava Black finished with 10 points after scoring seven in the third quarter.

For the Judges

  • Caitlin Gresko led four scorers in double figures with 15 points.
  • Emma Reavis and Lulu Ohm each scored 13 points while Mollie Obar contributed 10 points.

Notes

  • Or tied the UAA record for defensive rebounds with 17 by the end of the third quarter and set it with 20 after her final defensive board came with 18 seconds to play in the game.
  • A fellow Tartan previously shared the UAA defensive rebounding record with Rachelle Roll recording the mark in 2010 against Emory.
  • Or was one rebound off the school record, and UAA record, of 24 set by Lisa Murphy against Case Western Reserve in 2017.
