Three Tartans Named WGCA All-Great Lakes Region

(CORAL SPRINGS, Fla.) – Three Carnegie Mellon University women's golfers have been recognized for their play on the course this season by the Women's Golf Coaches Association (WGCA). Junior Charlotte Simpson (Towson, Md./Bryn Mawr School), sophomore Nadia Susanto (Irvine, Calif./Arnold O. Beckman) and freshman Alexis Sudjianto (Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Latin School) were named to the 2020 All-Great Lakes Region team. The three accolades are the most regional distinctions for the program in one season while it marks the second straight for Susanto and the second for Simpson, as she received the honor her freshman season.

The trio helped the Tartans earn the top position in the final Division III national rankings by Golfstat this season. The number one ranking was the first for a women's team sport at Carnegie Mellon. The Cardinal and Gray competed in four events (nine rounds) this season and ended with a team scoring average of 308.78.

The Tartans ended the shortened season with a top-place finish at the 14-team, 36-hole Savannah Invitational, which was played on the par 72, 5,800-yard Savannah Quarters Country Club. In the fall, the Tartans won two of the three events they competed in while they opened the season with a second-place showing at the 13-team 2019 NCAA Division III Preview held at the PGA National Palmer Course in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida. During play at the Golfweek DIII Fall Invitational, one of the two fall wins, the trio helped the Tartans break two team records by carding an 18-hole team score of 296 in the middle round and a 54-hole total of 908.

The Tartans were led by Sudjianto, who averaged a 74.9 in nine rounds and was crowned individual medalist at the Golfweek Fall Invitational. The freshman set the school record with a 54-hole score of 217 and tied the 18-hole record with a one-under par 71 in rounds two and three of the event. She also recorded four top-ten finishes in four events played and placed inside the top three in two.

Susanto finished second on the team with an average of 77.6 in nine rounds of play. She recorded three top-ten finishes this season while the sophomore won the Savannah Invitational. In the middle round of the Golfweek Invite, she tied her collegiate-low round of one-over par 73.

Simpson, who finished third on the team with an average of 78.0 in nine rounds, also recorded three top-ten finishes this season. Simpson's highest finish came at the Golfweek Invite where she tied for fourth after matching her season-best round of three-over par 75 to open play and then turned in back-to-back rounds of 76 for a 36-hole score of 227, which ranks as the third lowest 54-hole tournament score in program history.
