Team Effort Pushes Tartans Past No. 1 William Smith

(GETTYSBURG, Pa.) - A total team effort by the Carnegie Mellon University women's soccer team gave the team a big 2-1 win against No. 1 William Smith in its second match of the season to advance to 2-0 on the season. Senior Savina Reid (Briarcliff Manor, N.Y./Briarcliff) scored both for the Tartans, netting the game winner in the 66th minute.

In the 16th minute, the Tartans got forward and earned a corner kick. Reid put a header toward the net that was blocked. Freshman Tori Iatarola (West Dundee, Ill./Loyola Academy) picked up the loose ball and put a shot on net that was saved by Heron keeper Jackie Doyle but not secured. Reid pounced on the rebound at the right wing to score the first goal of the match and her third of the young season.

William Smith had a few opportunities to equalize in the first half as a shot in the 30th minute was blocked and a shot in the 33rd minute was wide of the net.

"I think both teams came in ready for a great game and both delivered," said head coach Yon Struble. "We played a very disciplined game and worked exceptionally hard on both sides of the ball."

The second half started with a shot on goal by Tartan freshman Haili Adams (Kirkland, Wash./Juanita).

William Smith eventually tied the score in the 62nd minute when a cross from the right by Theresa Lohr skimmed off a Tartan defender attempting to clear it and got past Tartan sophomore keeper Katie Liston (Lakewood, Ohio/Montessori HS at University Circle).

Four minutes later, Iatarola and Reid were at it again as Iatarola had a shot saved by Doyle before Reid had another header attempt blocked by the defense. The rebound fell to freshman Alex Moy (Southborough, Mass./Algonquin Regional) who found Reid on the left side of the goal. Reid ripped a shot at goal for her fourth of the year and it stood for the game winner.

"It was certainly a full team effort, starting with the players who were on the field to the team members pushing and encouraging every minute of the game," said Struble. "It was also fantastic to see so many contributors to the effort. Of course, to have Savina score two today and two yesterday is outstanding for her and her efforts."

The Tartans only got off one other shot attempt in the final 25 minutes while William Smith put four wide of the net, including three off corner kicks.

"This was a tremendous win for our program," Struble said. "William Smith is an outstanding and well coached team. Now we regroup and work even harder to prepare for our Tartan Cup and the excellent teams we have coming in next weekend."

The Tartans return home on Saturday, September 6 to host Salisbury University at 11:00 a.m. to start the DoubleTree Tartan Cup and then face No. 21 Rochester Institute of Technology on Sunday at 11:00 a.m.
