Tartans Shutout Sea Gulls 2-0

(PITTSBURGH, Pa.) – The Carnegie Mellon University women's soccer team increased its record to 3-0 on day one of the 2014 DoubleTree Tartan Cup against the Salisbury University Sea Gulls The Tartans won 2-0 in their second shutout of the season.

The first half of the game remained scoreless, but not without a solid effort from the Tartans as they outshot Salisbury with three shots to none on goal.  Senior Savina Reid (Briarcliff Manor, N.Y./Briarcliff) had a strong shot off a free kick that was saved by the Sea Gulls defense when Casey Arnone headed the ball away from the top corner in the 22nd minute.

The second half started with strikes at the goal from freshmen Tori Iatarola (West Dundee, Ill./Loyola Academy) and Grant Wilmer (Atlanta, Ga./Holy Innocents' Episcopal School).

Carnegie Mellon scored a goal in the 77th minute when the Sea Gulls goalkeeper mishandled a corner kick resulting in a throng of Tartans surrounding the goal as senior Carson Quiros (Atlanta, Ga./Whitefield Academy) knocked the ball into the net.

With less than 15 minutes to play, junior Alli McGugan (Chicago, Ill./Marist) chased down a long ball by the midfield, pressuring the defense and tapping the ball to her left for freshman Haili Adams (Kirkland, Wash./Juanita) who struck a shot to the top shelf to score her first career goal.

Sophomore Katie Liston (Lakewood, Ohio/Montessori HS at University Circle) made one save in net for the Tartans, earning her second shutout and third win of the year.

The Tartans will compete again on Sunday, September 7 at home against Rochester Institute of Technology at 11:00 a.m. to close out the DoubleTree Tartan Cup.
