Double OT Win Against Emory Keeps No. 5 Tartans atop UAA

(PITTSBURGH, Pa.) - The No. 5 Carnegie Mellon University women's soccer team scored in double overtime with six seconds to play and defeated the Emory University Eagles, 1-0, in University Athletic Association (UAA) play. The win puts the Tartans at 13-0-1 and 4-0-0 in the UAA while the Eagles dropped to 7-6-1 and 0-3-1.

The Tartans controlled the run of play and held the advantage in opportunities throughout the game, finally breaking through in the 110th minute.

Four saves in the first half by Emory's keeper Liz Arnold kept the halftime score at 0-0. She made a leaping save in the 18th minute when sophomore Tori Iatarola (West Dundee, Ill./Loyola Academy) riffled a shot high on frame.

Carnegie Mellon keeper Katie Liston (Lakewood, Ohio/Montessori HS at University Circle) recorded one save in the second half as the Eagles only had two shots in regulation.

The winning goal came when junior Megan Bartoshuk (Redwood City, Calif./Sequoia) continued a ball moving forward with 20 second left. The ball got passed to the right where sophomore Morgan Kontor (Annapolis, Md./Severn School) won the ball and got around a defender and sent a pass from the side of the 18-yard box to Bartoshuk in the box. Bartoshuk was able to shield the defender and touched the ball to her right and slide to take a shot around the keeper coming out to secure the ball.

The score is Bartoshuk's fifth of the season and puts the Tartans at the top of the UAA as the only unbeaten team in the league. The win against Emory was the Tartans' first triumph over the Eagles since 2006.

With the shutout, Liston ties the school record for career shutouts with 20.

The Tartans will next be in action on Friday, October 30 at No. 7 Washington University in St. Louis at 5:00 p.m. CT.
