Overtime Goal Cuts Season Short for No. 5 Tartans

(PITTSBURGH, Pa.) -The fifth-ranked Carnegie Mellon University women's soccer team's season came to an end Friday, November 20 when 20th-ranked Calvin College scored in overtime to defeat the Tartans, 1-0, in the 2015 NCAA Division III Women's Soccer Championship's sectional semifinal. The Tartans finished the year with a 17-2-1 record.

The Tartans had two shots on goal in the first half coming from sophomores Tori Iatarola (West Dundee, Ill./Loyola Academy) and Haili Adams (Kirkland, Wash./Juanita) while Calvin had one shot for the half that was high.

In the second half, Calvin put a shot on frame when junior Katie Liston (Lakewood, Ohio/Montessori HS at University Circle) stopped Taylor TenHarmsel's attempt in the 60th minute.

Senior Alli McGugan (Chicago, Ill./Marist) had a break-away in the 70th minute but her shot from 18 yards out was stopped by Holly Ellerbroek. A minute later, a free kick by Iatarola was saved by Ellerbroek, keeping the score knotted at 0-0.

Two other attempts by the Tartans in the final seven minutes were high of the goal while Calvin's Paige Capel's attempt in the final minute was also high.

A minute into overtime, Calvin played a ball out of the corner and to the foot of Sydney Kinney. Kinney sent the ball into the box where Carly Veenstra was able to settle it and strike a shot to the lower left corner for the game winner.

The Knights advance to the sectional final for the first time in program history and will face the winner of eighth-ranked Thomas More College and ninth-ranked Centre College at 1:00 p.m. Saturday in Pittsburgh.
