Adams’ Double-Overtime Goal Lifts No. 6 Tartans to Second Victory

(NEWPORT NEWS, Va.) – The Carnegie Mellon University women's soccer team, ranked sixth nationally, traveled to Christopher Newport University for the Captains Classic on Saturday, September 10. In the second day of play, the Tartans defeated the Marlins of Virginia Wesleyan College, 2-1, on junior Haili Adams' (Kirkland, Wash./Juanita) goal with 30 seconds remaining in double-overtime. The Tartans are now 2-2 on the year while Virginia Wesleyan moves to 1-2.

Virginia Wesleyan grabbed a 1-0 lead in the 29th minute when Brooke Adamchak played a high bouncer over the defense to Katie Roberts who won a foot race with junior keeper Sarah Mahler (Cincinnati, Ohio/Madeira), touching the ball into the back of the net for the finish.

Carnegie Mellon had a chance to tie up the contest when freshman Vayda Farino (Scottdale, Pa /Southmoreland) took a hard shot to the left, but Marlins keeper Taylor Chapman made a diving save that deflected away for a corner kick. The Tartans capitalized on the ensuing corner kick, as sophomore Katja Brackelmanns-Puig (Randolph, N.J./Randolph) got a head on it, but it was blocked away by a Marlin defender. The ball went right back to Brackelmanns-Puig's foot where she attempted a shot, but miss-hit it and classmate Kaily Bruch (Glenview, Ill./Glenbrook South) was there for the rebound and swung through for the equalizer.

The two teams battled through the entire second half and the two overtimes with the Tartans controlling most of the play. The score remained tied until Adams capitalized for the game-winner with 30 seconds left in double-overtime.

Junior Tori Iatarola (West Dundee, Ill./Loyola Academy) took a corner kick that resulted in a header by junior Sienna Stritter (Menlo Park, Calif./Menlo School) that was directed to the foot of Adams who ripped it hard into the back of the net.

Carnegie Mellon will be back in action on Wednesday, September 14 when the Presidents of Washington and Jefferson College travel to Carnegie Mellon. Start time is set for 7:00 p.m.
