Tartans Earn 2-1 Overtime Win Against Nazareth

(PITTSBURGH, Pa.) - The 24th-ranked Carnegie Mellon University women's soccer team hosted Nazareth College for its last non-conference match of the season, defeating the Golden Flyers in overtime, 2-1, on senior day. The Tartans are now 10-3-1 for the year, reaching 10 wins for the fifth time in six years.

The Tartans scored first in the ninth minute when freshman Alex Adams (Pittsburgh, Pa. / North Allegheny) connected with freshman Helena Spencer (Warrenton, Va. / Patriot) for Spencer's third goal of the season. Sophomore Maddy Lui (Basking Ridge, N.J. / Ridge) started the play with a long ball down the left sideline for Adams. The freshman forward then dribbled past her defender and to the end line as Spencer ran with her step-for-step. Adams played a simple ball across the goal mouth between the keeper and a defender for Spencer to calmly finish to the open net.

Nazareth (9-4-2) was able to equalize in the 15th minute when a Tartan defender and keeper got mixed up. The ball not cleared, bounced forward to two Nazareth players and McKayla Hughes was able to head it in the open net.

During a four-minute span in the second period, the Tartans put three shots on goal and hit the crossbar once. As the Tartans controlled the second half, they had six other shots saved by Hannah Miller in goal for Nazareth from the 68th minute on.

Adams got a shot off in the first overtime period, but it too was saved by Miller.

Back-to-back corner kicks by the Tartans in the 103rd minute led to the game winner for the Tartans.

Senior Tara Durstewitz (Old Bridge, N.J. / Old Bridge) served a low-driven ball to the near post. Adams beat the Golden Flyers to it, and shot it low and off a defender as the ball hit the underside of the crossbar and crossed the goal line for the winning goal with 6:14 to play in overtime.

Senior Andrea Sipos (Bel Air, Md. / Bel Air) earned her eighth win in goal this season, making one save.

The Tartans return to University Athletic Association (UAA) action on Friday, November 1 at third-ranked Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri. Game time is set for 5:30 p.m. CT.
