(CHICAGO, Ill.) – The 11th-ranked Carnegie Mellon University women's soccer team traveled to Chicago, Illinois, to play the University of Chicago on Friday, October 14 for a University Athletic Association (UAA) contest. The Tartans scored late in the second half to win 1-0 and advance their record to 8-1-2 and 2-0-1 in the UAA. Chicago drops to 7-5-1 and 0-2-1.

Inside The Box Score

  • It was a scoreless game at the half with Chicago holding a 1-0 shots on goal advantage with senior Olivia Brand making the save in the 41st minute.
  • The Tartans had two corner kicks in the first half but a shot by senior Rachel Legg off the second corner went wide of the goal in the 32nd minute.
  • The Tartans increased their offensive pressure in the second period with five shots, including two on frame in the first 15 minutes.
  • Chicago's first shot of the half came in the 62nd minute.
  • A handball just outside the box by a Chicago defender led to a free kick for the Tartans in the 74th minute.
  • That free kick was taken by junior Cecelia Dieterich who fired a right-footed shot around and over top of the wall for her second goal of the season.
  • Sophomore Maria Askounis had an opportunity turned away by Sophie Pilarski a minute later when Pilarski met Askounis at the top of the box to make a kick save after Askounis got around a defender.
  • With 10 minutes to play, Chicago's Sarah Ginsburg ran onto a long pass and was out in front of the Tartan defense before sophomore Avery McGuirt chased her down and blocked her shot.
  • The Maroons earned a free kick from about 25 yards out and near the penalty arc with less than three minutes in the game. The shot attempt was driven low and deflected wide resulting in a pass back across the box with Brand jumping high to push it away and just over the head of a charging Maroon before it bounced out for a Chicago corner kick.
  • The Tartans cleared the corner kick out of the zone and the service back into the box was grabbed by Brand who, with the help of her midfield, got the ball upfield for the Tartans to hold possession and close out the game.

Thoughts from Dieterich

"We fought through a tough game and managed to come out on the winning end. I think we were a little frantic in the first half but once we settled down and were able to connect with the forwards we found ways to open up chances."

"I've been working on those free kicks in practice and I knew where I was going to try to place it. I am just glad I was able to execute it."

Thoughts from Head Coach Yon Struble

"Any win in the UAA is huge. A road win is outstanding. Chicago is always a strong, well-coached team and our team is elated to get the victory today."

"Our mindset heading into Sunday is to take the confidence from this game and give a second strong performance at WashU."

Notes

  • The last win in Chicago for the Tartans came in 2015 when the third-ranked Tartans topped the 18th-ranked Maroons, 4-1.
  • Dieterich's goal is her first game-winner of the season and the third of her career.
  • Dieterich now has two career goals against the Maroons, both game-winners, and five career points.
