Tartan Women Place Fifth at UAA Championships

(ROCHESTER, N.Y.) - The Carnegie Mellon University women's swimming and diving team finished fifth at the University Athletic Association (UAA) Swimming and Diving Championships hosted by the University of Rochester in Rochester, N.Y.

Sophomore Miranda Ford (Skillman, N.J./Montgomery) placed 12th in the 1,650-yard freestyle, completing the race in 18:01.13, to open the evening finals session.

Sophomore Emma Shi (Penfield, N.Y./Penfield) won the "B" final heat of the 200-yard backstroke, placing ninth overall, in a career-best time of 2:05.03. Senior Paige Sieffert (Ann Arbor, Mich./Saline) was just behind her in 2:07.48 with senior Kira Singhaus (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill West) placing 12th in 2:08.17.

Freshman Allison Caron (Burnt Hills, N.Y./Notre Dame-Bishop Gibbons) and senior Corrine Bacigal (Campbell Hall, N.Y./Washingtonville) also swam in the "B" final of the 200-yard backstroke finishing 14th and 15th, respectively, in 2:10.39 and 2:11.13.

Junior Allison Kirkby (West Chester, Pa./Conestoga) placed 15th in 100-yard freestyle in 53.12, reaching the finals with a career-best time of 52.70 in the preliminaries.

In the 200-yard breaststroke, sophomore Kimberly Hochstedler (Mishawaka, Ind./Penn) swam to a fourth-place finish in a season-best time of 2:21.95.

Sophomore Mary St. John (Bethesda, Md./Sidwell Friends School) earned All-UAA Third Team honors in the 200-yard butterfly, finishing the event in a career-best and NCAA provisional qualifying time of 2:05.49.

The 400-yard freestyle relay of Kirkby, Shi, junior Shieri Suzuka (Yorktown Heights, N.Y./Yorktown) and Singhaus swam a season-best time of 3:33.81 closing the meet with a seventh-place finish.
