Four Earn Place at NCAA Championships

(INDIANAPOLIS, Ind.) – Four Carnegie Mellon University swimming and diving athletes will be competing at the 2016 NCAA Division III Men's and Women's Swimming and Diving Championships Wednesday-Saturday, March 16-19 at the Greensboro Aquatic Center in Greensboro, North Carolina.

Junior diver Machika Kaku (Irvine, Calif./University) will be making her second appearance at the NCAA Championships after earning All-America Honorable Mention on the 1-meter diving board last year. Kaku will be diving in both the 1-meter and 3-meter diving events.

Joining Kaku at the championships event will be freshman diver Gabriel Bamforth (Cambridge, Mass./CRLS), freshman swimmer Mitchell Riek (Sunland, Calif./Bishop Alemany) and sophomore swimmer Mary St. John (Bethesda, Md./Sidwell Friends School). Bamforth owns both the 1-meter and 3-meter diving school records for the men and recently won the University Athletic Association (UAA) Championship on the 1-meter board.

Riek was invited to the championships in the 200-yard butterfly and 1,650-yard freestyle and will also compete in the 500-yard freestyle. St. John was invited to compete in the 400-yard IM and will also swim the 200-yard IM and 200-yard butterfly. All three of St. John's top times came at the UAA Championships where she finished third in the 200-yard butterfly.
