Tartans Place Fifth at UAA Championships

(CHICAGO, Ill.) – The Carnegie Mellon University women's swimming and diving team placed fifth at the University Athletic Association (UAA) Championships hosted by the University of Chicago when the event concluded Saturday evening.

The 1,650-yard freestyle started the evening and sophomore Kierstyn Cassidy (Waynesville, Ohio / Waynesville) and senior Taylor Brown (San Antonio, Texas / Johnson) each swam to NCAA B Cut times. Cassidy finished ninth overall in a career-best time of 17:20.69, which also set a new school record, while Brown finished 12th in 17:31.20. Freshman Clare Brown (Grantham, N.J. / Lebanon) also swam in the event and finished 16th in 17:47.26.

Freshman Tiffany Tseng (Westford, Mass. / Westford Academy) earned All-UAA honors in the 200-yard backstroke when she placed third with a season-best and NCAA B Cut time of 2:02.06. Tseng led three Tartans in the final with freshman Bonnie Wang (Vancouver, BC / Collingwood School) placing fourth in 2:02.51 and junior Jessica Chau (Ridgewood, N.J. / Ridgewood) placing fifth in 2:02.68. Both times for Wang and Chau are also season bests and NCAA B Cut qualifying times.

Freshman Mathea Myhrvold (Raleigh, N.C. / Wakefield) and senior Mary Day (Warren, N.J. / Mount Saint Mary Academy) swam in the B final of the 100-yard freestyle, finishing fifth and sixth respectively in season-best times of 52.66 and 52.80.

Freshman Eva Guo (Flushing, N.Y. / Townsend Harris) was the top Tartan in the 200-yard breaststroke, as she finished 11th overall in 2:23.68 before senior Emma Nicklas-Morris (Winston-Salem, N.C. / RJ Reynolds) closed her UAA career with a fifth-place finish in the 200-yard butterfly in a career-best, NCAA B Cut and school-record time of 2:03.43.

The women's 400-yard freestyle relay of Tseng, Day, Myhrvold and Nicklas-Morris closed the meet with a fifth-place showing in a school-record time of 3:28.63. The time is also an NCAA B cut time.
