Xu Wins 200 IM at UAA Championships

(ATLANTA, Ga.) – The Carnegie Mellon University women's swimming and diving team began competition at the University Athletic Association (UAA) Championships on Wednesday, February 8 with one event and continued action on Thursday, February 9 with six events. The Tartans are in fourth place with 388 points with two days left to compete.

Top Performances

  • Freshman Savannah Xu won the 200-yard IM in a school record time of 2:02.88, dropping .01 off her previous school record that ranks second in Division III this year.
  • Junior Kelli Kuramoto earned a third-place finish on the 3-meter diving board after scoring 432.75 points following 11 dives in the finals.
  • Xu also swam on the 200-yard freestyle relay that placed sixth in 1:35.53 and the 400-yard medley relay that placed fourth in 3:48.23.
  • The 400-yard medley relay set a new school record behind the swims of senior Tiffany Tseng, freshman Yitian Zhang, Xu, and freshman Eliana Szabo.
  • Freshman Grace Malinger placed 15th in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 24.07.
  • Freshman Annie Wang had the top finish for the team in the 500-yard freestyle with a 17th-place showing in 5:00.98. Wang dropped nearly six seconds off her previous best time.
  • On Wednesday, the 800-yard freestyle relay placed sixth in 7:40.07.

Notes

  • Xu is the first UAA Champion for the Tartan women since Kim Hochstedler won the 200-yard breaststroke in 2018.
  • The third-place 3-meter diving finish for Kuramoto is her top finish in two UAA seasons and the first All-UAA award for a women's diver since Machika Kaku placed third on the 3-meter board and second on the 1-meter board in 2015.
