#9 Tartans Defeat #15 Washington and Lee at Home, 6-3

(PITTSBURGH, Pa.) - The ninth-ranked Carnegie Mellon University women's tennis team hosted 15th-ranked Washington and Lee University on Saturday, March 31, defeating the Generals, 6-3. The Tartans move to 13-3 for the year while the Generals drop to 10-4.

The Tartans swept through doubles play to take an important 3-0 lead. Senior Cori Sidell (Redwood Shores, Calif. / Carlmont) and sophomore Courtney Ollis (Suffern, N.Y. / Suffern) started the scoring with an impressive 8-2 win at first doubles against the 16th-ranked pair of Michelle Fleenor and Lauren Hassell. Senior Katie Lai (Hagatna, Guam / St. Andrew's Episcopal School) and junior Jamie Vizelman (Highland Heights, Ohio / Mayfield) then won 8-5 at third doubles before the 5th-ranked pair of sophomore Vinaya Rao (Vernon Hills, Ill. / Adlai E. Stevenson) and freshman Melissa Strome (West Bloomfield, Mich. / West Bloomfield) won 8-6 at second doubles.

Junior Marina Selenica (Birmingham, Mich. / Detroit Country Day School) made the score 4-1 with a 6-4, 6-2 victory at sixth singles before Vizelman clinched the match at third singles with a 6-1, 6-4 win against Lily Horsley.

The final victory of the day for the Tartans came off Strome's racket, as the freshman won, 6-3, 7-5, at fifth singles.

The Tartans will next travel to the University of Mary Washington to face the 19th-ranked Eagles on Saturday, April 7.
