ITA Honors Women’s Tennis as All-Academic Team; Four Named Scholar Athletes

The Carnegie Mellon University women's tennis team was honored for the 10th straight season and 17th time in the last 18 years by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) as an ITA All-Academic Team. In addition, four players were named ITA Scholar Athletes.

Prior to the 2019 NCAA Singles and Doubles Championships beginning on Friday, May 24, the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) announced that Carnegie Mellon University women’s tennis freshman Danna Taylor (Orlando, Fla. / Circle Christian School) was the ITA Women’s Rookie of the Year. Taylor was chosen as the top freshman in the Atlantic-South and stood out among the three other regional honorees to become the second Tartan to earn the national award.

Carnegie Mellon University freshman Danna Taylor (Orlando, Fla. / Circle Christian School) won her first singles match at the NCAA Division III Women's Tennis Singles and Doubles Championships before completing play in the tournament later on Friday afternoon. The tournament was held at Kalamazoo College and was moved indoors due to rain.

The 11th-ranked Carnegie Mellon University women's tennis team played second-ranked Claremont-Mudd-Scripps on Monday in the quarterfinals of the 2019 NCAA Division III Women's Tennis Championship with play moved indoors at the Markin Center in Kalamazoo, Michigan. The Tartans run at the championships came to a close, as the Athenas defeated the Tartans, 5-1.

Carnegie Mellon University women’s tennis freshman Danna Taylor (Orlando, Fla. / Circle Christian School) and senior Jamie Vizelman (Highland Heights, Ohio / Mayfield) received regional honors from the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA). Taylor was named the ITA Atlantic-South Rookie of the Year while Vizelman received ITA Most Improved Senior for the Atlantic-South region.

Freshman Danna Taylor (Orlando, Fla. / Circle Christian School) headlines six Carnegie Mellon University women’s tennis players honored by the University Athletic Association (UAA). Taylor was named the UAA Women’s Tennis Rookie of the Year as part of the 2019 All-UAA Women’s Tennis Team. The freshman is joined by sophomore Melissa Strome (West Bloomfield, Mich. / West Bloomfield) and senior Jamie Vizelman (Highland Heights, Ohio / Mayfield) on the first team.

The match was played on the campus of Kenyon College in Gambier, Ohio. The Tartans improve to 18-7 while the Thunder conclude the season with a mark of 17-6.

Carnegie Mellon University will have four tennis players continue their season after being selected to compete in the 2019 NCAA Division III Singles and Doubles Tennis Championships at Stowe Stadium in Kalamazoo, Michigan, from May 24-26. Representing the women’s program will be sophomore Melissa Strome (West Bloomfield, Mich. / West Bloomfield) and freshman Danna Taylor (Orlando, Fla. / Circle Christian School), while seniors Chaz Downing (Newport Beach, Calif. / Corona Del Mar) and Daniel Levine (Highland Park, Ill. / Boca Prep International School) will represent the men’s program.

The Carnegie Mellon University women's tennis team has been selected to compete for the 2019 NCAA Division III Women's Tennis Championship and will travel to Kenyon College for the first, second, and third rounds of competition. The appearance in the postseason event will be the 14th in 15 years for the Tartans, all coming under 16-year head coach Andrew Girard. Play is set to begin on Thursday, May 9 and run through Saturday, May 11.

The Eagles won 5-1 over the Tartans, as the Cardinal and Gray move to 16-7 overall. The Tartans will face eighth-ranked Brandeis University on Saturday in the third-place match.
