Strome and Rao Win Doubles Title at Hall of Fame ITA Grass Court Invitational
(NEWPORT, R.I.) - Junior Vinaya Rao (Vernon Hills, Ill. / Adlai E. Stevenson) and sophomore Melissa Strome (West Bloomfield, Mich. / West Bloomfield) were crowned doubles champions at the Hall of Fame ITA Grass Court Invitational on Saturday, September 15. The two played in the finals of the Bueno/Court Flight.
Rao and Strome faced Washington and Lee University's Georgia Wright and Taylor Garcia on Saturday, winning 8-5 to take the doubles crown.
Senior Jamie Vizelman (Highland Heights, Ohio / Mayfield) and junior Courtney Ollis (Suffern, N.Y. / Suffern) played in the championship match of the Navratilova/Shriver Flight, falling 8-3 to Emory University's Daniela Lopez and Emma Cartledge.
In singles play on Saturday, Strome fell in her semifinals match to Emory's Defne Olcay, 6-4, 6-3.
Vizelman won her singles match, 6-3, 4-6, 1-0 (10-8), against Marjorie Antohi of the University of Chicago while Rao dropped a three-set match to Chicago's Claire Honda, 3-6, 6-0, 1-0 (10-6).
Ollis also played a singles match on Saturday, falling 7-5, 6-4 to Washington and Lee's Valerie Marshall.
The Tartans will conclude play at the Hall of Fame ITA Grass Court Invitational on Sunday, September 16.
