Tartans Split Action with Division I Opponents

(NIAGARA UNIVERSITY, N.Y.) - The Carnegie Mellon University women's tennis team traveled to Niagara University, New York, for two matches against Division I opponents on Saturday, September 29. The Tartans topped Niagara 6-1 before falling 5-2 to the University of Buffalo.

The Tartans swept doubles action against Niagara to earn the first point of the match under Division I scoring rules. In singles play, senior Jamie Vizelman (Highland Heights, Ohio / Mayfield) won, 6-4, 6-1, at first singles while freshman Danna Taylor (Orlando, Fla. / Circle Christian School) played second singles, winning, 6-2, 6-4.

Sophomore Alex Iordache (Princeton, N.J. / South Brunswick) won at fourth singles, 6-0, 6-2, and freshman Beata Liberchuk (Edgewater, N.J. / Dwight-Englewood) won 6-3, 6-2 at fifth singles. Freshman Victoria Chang (Dublin, Ohio / Dublin Jerome) was also a winner after a three-set win at sixth singles.

Winning for the Tartans against Buffalo was Taylor at second singles and Liberchuk at fifth singles. Taylor won 6-0, 6-2 while Liberchuk finished off a three-set tiebreaker with a 6-3, 2-6, 1-0 (10-7).

The Tartans will return home and face Walsh University on Friday, October 5 for their final dual match of the fall season.
