Tartans Split a Pair of Matches on Spring Trip

(ORLANDO, Fla.) - The 10th-ranked Carnegie Mellon University women's tennis team split a pair of matches on Sunday in Orlando Florida. The Tartans started the day with a hard fought 8-1 loss to topped ranked Emory University before defeating Dickinson College 8-1. The Tartans are now 8-3 overall.

In the Tartans setback to Emory, the Tartans last three superbreakers and a tiebreaker at first doubles. The Tartans lone point came at second doubles when junior Vinaya Rao (Vernon Hills, Ill. / Adlai E. Stevenson) and classmate Courtney Ollis (Suffern, N.Y. / Suffern) won 8-4.

Carnegie Mellon started play against Dickinson with a sweep in doubles play. Sophomore Alex Iordache (Princeton, N.J. / South Brunswick) and freshman Janabelle Wu (San Jose, Calif. / Lynbrook) started the scoring with an 8-0 win at second doubles. Ollis teamed with freshman Danna Taylor (Orlando, Fla. / Circle Christian School) against the Red Devils and the tandem won 8-1 at first doubles. The freshmen pair of Victoria Chang (Dublin, Ohio / Dublin Jerome) and Lindy Cornwall (Poway, Calif. / Poway) completed the sweep with an 8-1 win in the third spot.

In singles play, Carnegie Mellon picked up wins at first through fifth with Taylor recording the clinching match point. Taylor won 6-0, 6-0 at first singles.

The Tartans will continue play in Florida on Monday with an 11:30 a.m. match against third-ranked Amherst College and a 6:00 p.m. contest versus Division II Shippensburg University.
