Vizelman's Three-Set Match Clinches 5-4 Win for #10 Tartans over Division I Saint Francis

(PITTSBURGH, Pa.) - The 10th-ranked Carnegie Mellon University women's tennis team hosted Division I Saint Francis (Pa.) on Sunday at the Alpha Tennis and Fitness Club and defeated the Red Flash 5-4 following senior Jamie Vizelman's (Highland Heights, Ohio / Mayfield) three-set victory at first singles. The Tartans are now 11-5 overall while the Red Flash are now 3-14.

Carnegie Mellon took a 2-1 lead following doubles. The Tartans claimed a point by default at the third spot and then the Tartans top tandem of Vizelman and sophomore Melissa Strome (West Bloomfield, Mich. / West Bloomfield) won a tiebreaker, 8-7 (7), to give the Tartans the advantage heading into singles.

Carnegie Mellon once again claimed a point by default at six singles and then freshman Lindy Cornwall (Poway, Calif. / Poway) won 6-7 (5), 6-3, 6-4 at the fifth spot to give Carnegie Mellon a 4-1 lead.

The Red Flash then took points at fourth, third and second singles, all in three sets, to knot the score at 4-4 leaving first singles to decide the match.

Vizelman dropped the first set 7-5 and then trailed 5-4 in the second before winning three straight games to force a third set. The senior then ran away with it in the third set winning 6-1 to give the Tartans the 5-4 team victory.

Carnegie Mellon will be back on the courts Saturday, April 6 when 12th-ranked University of Mary Washington travels to Pittsburgh for a 10:00 a.m. match. The Tartans will also entertain Division I Duquesne University on Saturday at 5:00 p.m.
