#10 Tartans Top #22 Washington and Lee, 5-4

(PITTSBURGH, Pa.) - The 10th-ranked Carnegie Mellon University women's tennis team defeated 22nd-ranked Washington and Lee University in a regional match on Saturday, April 20 by a 5-4 score. The Tartans are now 15-6 for the season while the Generals are 13-6.

The number one doubles pair of sophomore Melissa Strome (West Bloomfield, Mich. / West Bloomfield) and freshman Danna Taylor (Orlando, Fla. / Circle Christian School) started the scoring with an 8-1 victory. The Tartans then took a 2-0 lead with a 8-3 win at number two doubles by junior Vinaya Rao (Vernon Hills, Ill. / Adlai E. Stevenson) and junior Courtney Ollis (Suffern, N.Y. / Suffern).

W&L picked up a win at number three doubles to cut the deficit in half heading into singles play.

Taylor was the first to finish singles action with a 6-4, 6-2 victory in the first slot. Freshman Janabelle Wu (San Jose, Calif. / Lynbrook) gave the Tartans a 4-2 advantage with a 6-2, 6-4 win at fourth singles before senior Jamie Vizelman (Highland Heights, Ohio / Mayfield) sealed the match with a 6-3, 6-3 score at second singles to make the score 5-3 with number three singles still to finish.

The Tartans will next travel to Orlando, Florida, for the University Athletic Association (UAA) Championship with play set to begin on Thursday, April 25. The draw for the tournament will be released by Tuesday, April 23.
