#7 Tartans Down UAA Foe #29 Case Western Reserve 8-1

(CLEVELAND, Ohio) - For the second time this season, the seventh-ranked Carnegie Mellon University women's tennis team defeated 29th-ranked Case Western Reserve University. This time, the Tartans defeated the Spartans 8-1 at the Medical Mutual Tennis Pavilion in Cleveland, Ohio on Saturday, after winning 5-0 in October on Carnegie Mellon's outdoor courts. The win improves the Tartans record to 8-1 while the Spartans move to 3-3.

Carnegie Mellon led 2-1 after doubles play picking up wins at the second and third spots. The tandem of sophomore Lindy Cornwall (Poway, Calif. / Poway) and senior Vinaya Rao (Vernon Hills, Ill. / Adlai E. Stevenson) won 8-3 at second doubles while the combo of sophomore Janabelle Wu (San Jose, Calif. / Lynbrook) and freshman Bin Zheng (Miami, Fla. / Doral Academy) won by the identical score at third.

Rao made the score 3-1 with a straight set win at second singles, defeating her opponent 6-2, 6-0. The Tartans fourth point came at six singles when freshman Madeline Fidel (Wheaton, Ill. / Wheaton North) also when a straight set match by the scores of 6-3, 6-4. Zheng then clinched the win for the Cardinal and Gray with a 6-2, 6-3 win at third singles.

Carnegie Mellon will be back on the courts Friday, February 28 when the open play at the ITA National Team Indoor Championship against eighth-ranked University of Chicago.
