#5 Tartans Pick up 5-4 Win Against Division I Saint Francis

(VALENCIA, Pa.) - The Carnegie Mellon University women's tennis team, ranked fifth in Division III, hosted Division I Saint Francis on Friday, March 19 indoors at the Lakevue Athletic Club in Valencia, Pennsylvania. The Tartans won the match by a 5-4 decision to move to 5-0 for the year.

The third doubles pair of senior Elizabeth Schulz (Fresno, Calif. / Clovis North) and freshman Victoria Tankova (Toronto, Ontario / Lorne Park Secondary School) won by default as the Red Flash only has a roster of five players. After the visitors won at second doubles, junior Lindy Cornwall (Poway, Calif. / Poway) and sophomore Bin Zheng (Miami, Fla. / Doral Academy) defeated their opponents at first doubles by an 8-5 score to give the Tartans a 2-1 advantage.

Schulz won again by default at sixth singles and after the Red Flash won at second singles, Tankova won a three-set match at fifth singles, 6-3, 2-6, 6-2, to give the Tartans a 4-2 lead.

Match point was won by freshman Megan Qiang (Cleveland, Ohio / Hathaway Brown School) at fourth singles by a 6-2, 6-3 scoreline after the Red Flash tied it at 4-all with victories at first and third singles.

The Tartans return to action on Sunday, March 21 at Division II Indiana University of Pennsylvania at 12:00 p.m.
