Tartans Win Fourth Straight After Topping Division II IUP 5-2

(WEXFORD, Pa.) - The Carnegie Mellon University women's tennis team played Indiana University of Pennsylvania, 19th-ranked team in Division II, on Saturday and came away with a 5-2 victory. The event was held at the indoor courts at Greensburg Racquet Club while playing by Division II game scoring. The Tartans are now 5-1 while IUP goes to 3-2.

Carnegie Mellon swept doubles to secure the team point. The Tartans' top tandem of senior Lindy Cornwall (Poway, Calif. / Poway) and junior Bin Zheng (Miami, Fla. / Doral Academy) started off with a 6-1 victory followed by a 6-2 win at second doubles by senior Janabelle Wu (San Jose, Calif. / Lynbrook) and freshman Crystal Zhou (Austin, Texas / LASA). Freshman Zoe Angell (Midland, Mich. / H.H. Dow) and junior Megan Qiang (Cleveland, Ohio / Hathaway Brown School) then completed the sweep with a 7-6 (5) win in the third spot.

After IUP won at second and third singles to claim a 2-1 advantage, Carnegie Mellon then won the next four points. Qiang took the first point with a 6-4, 6-1 decision at five singles. Freshman Sarah Yang (Alpharetta, Ga. / Northview) won 6-4, 6-2 at the top spot and then Zheng sealed the win with a 6-2, 6-4 victory at the four spot. Angell closed the match with a three-set win at six singles.

The Tartans will be back on the courts Friday, February 25, against Division I Duquesne University at 7:00 p.m. at the Alpha Tennis Center
