#11 Tartans Defeat #12 Case Western Reserve 7-2

(WEXFORD, Pa.) – The Carnegie Mellon University women's tennis team, ranked 11th in the latest Division III ITA Collegiate Tennis Rankings, hosted 12th-ranked and University Athletic Association (UAA) foe Case Western Reserve University on Saturday afternoon. Due to inclement weather the match was moved indoors to the Oxford Athletic Club in Wexford, Pennsylvania. The Tartans improve to 13-5 with a 7-2 victory over the Spartans, who are now 15-2.

The Tartans top doubles tandem of senior Lindy Cornwall (Poway, Calif. / Poway) and junior Bin Zheng (Miami, Fla. / Doral Academy) claimed the first point of the match with an 8-3 victory over Pallavi Goculdas and Nina Hoog. Moments later, the Cardinal and Gray took a 2-0 advantage when junior Megan Qiang (Cleveland, Ohio / Hathaway Brown School) and freshman Zoe Angell (Midland, Mich. / H.H. Dow) defeated Radha Patel and Katherine Wang 8-2 at third doubles.

The third point for doubles went to the Spartans as Lily McCloskey and Anna Kan won 8-6 at the second spot over senior Janabelle Wu (San Jose, Calif. / Lynbrook) and freshman Crystal Zhou (Austin, Texas / LASA).

Qiang gave the Tartans a 3-1 lead with a 6-0, 6-2 win at sixth singles. A 6-3, 6-2 win at fifth singles by Angell gave the Cardinal and Gray their fourth point. Yang then sealed the win for the Tartans with a 6-2, 6-4 decision at the top spot.

Also collecting wins in singles play was Zheng at five by the scores of 6-1, 3-6, 6-2 and Cornwall at three winning 6-1, 6-7 (5), 1-0 (9).

The Tartans will next travel to Altamonte Springs, Florida, for the UAA Championship with play set to begin on Friday, April 22. The draw for the tournament will be released by Monday, April 18.
