Tartans Start Season at Kenyon Invitational

(GAMBIER, Ohio) – The Carnegie Mellon University women's tennis team traveled to Gambier, Ohio, for the Kenyon College Invitational on Saturday and Sunday, September 10-11 to open its 2022-23 season.

Singles Play:

  • Six Tartans went 2-0 in singles play.
  • Freshmen Divya Venkatarama, Manuela Van Cotthem and Anika Joshi each went unbeaten in singles in their collegiate debut for the Cardinal and Gray.
  • Venkatarama opened play with a straight-set victory over UAA counterpart Radha Patel of Case Western Reserve. She then topped Katy Graydon of Division II IUP.
  • Van Cotthem defeated Asha Shukla of Case Western Reserve and Lalasa Nagireddy of Kenyon.
  • Joshi recorded wins over Janaki Jagannathan of Wooster and Lillia Walter of Otterbein.
  • Bin Zheng started her senior campaign with a 2-0 mark defeating Sarah Robertson of Denison and Joanna Stralka of IUP.
  • Sophomores Zoe Angell and Malikaa Marathe also compiled a 2-0 mark. Angell started with a win over Monique Braul of Denison before closing play with a decision over Lydia Vlachou of IUP. Marathe began play defeating Anna Kan of Case Western Reserve and then topped John Carroll's Morgan Dobos.

Doubles Play:

  • Four Tartan double tandems collected wins over the weekend.
  • Zheng teamed with sophomore Sarah Yang to defeat Shadia Amado Aguad and Eleni Lazaridou of Kenyon by the score of 8-5.
  • Van Cotthem and Joshi won an 8-6 match over Marta Laska and Anna Pastore of Oberlin.
  • Sophomore Simran Bedi partnered with Marathe for a win over Asha Shukla and Katalina Wang of Case Western Reserve.
  • The Tartans' final doubles win came from the duo of Angell and Venkatarama as they downed Laska and Pastore.

  • "We obtained invaluable experience with some critical early season matches and had a phenomenal weekend towards building team comradery."

Notes

  • Zheng reached 100 career victories in 140 career matches, becoming the 10th fastest women's player to reach the milestone in school history.
