#11 Tartans Topped by #2 Chicago in ITA Women's National Team Indoor Championship Opening Round

(NICHOLASVILLE, Ky.) - The Carnegie Mellon University women's tennis team opened the 2023 Division III ITA Women's National Team Indoor Championship on Friday in Nicholasville, Kentucky. The Tartans faced University Athletic Association foe and second-seeded University of Chicago in the first round, as they dropped a 7-1 decision to the Maroons. The Cardinal and Gray move to 7-2 in dual match play while the Maroons remain unbeaten at 6-0.

Doubles Play:

  • Chicago led 2-1 following doubles play after collecting wins in the second and third spots.
  • The Tartans top tandem of junior Danna Taylor and sophomore Crystal Zhou claimed the team point in doubles play with an 8-4 win.

Singles Play:

  • At third singles, Zhou forced a third set after dropping the first 6-4 and winning by the identical score in the second, but then dropped the super tiebreaker 10-5.
  • Freshman Manuela Van Cotthem played six singles and won the first set 7-6 (7) before falling 6-4 in the second. The match was then stopped following set two.

Next Up

  • The Tartans will play 10th-ranked Sewanee at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday, March 4 in the consolation round.
