Tartans Take Down DII West Liberty, 5-2

(WEST LIBERTY, W.Va.) – The Carnegie Mellon University women's tennis team, ranked 11th in NCAA Division III, traveled to West Liberty, West Virginia, to play Division II West Liberty University on Saturday, March 25. The Tartans won 5-2 and are now 14-3 while West Liberty is 8-3.

How it Happened

  • Carnegie Mellon won all three doubles matches and led 1-0 heading into singles play after playing by Division II scoring rules.
  • The first doubles pair of junior Danna Taylor and sophomore Crystal Zhou finished first with a 6-1 win and sophomore Zoe Angell and freshman Anika Joshi won 6-3 and third doubles.
  • The Tartans took a 2-0 lead after Zhou won 6-3, 6-3 at second singles.
  • Freshman Manuela Van Cotthem put the Tartans up 3-0 with a 6-4, 7-5 win at third singles.
  • Freshman Divya Venkatarama earned match point with a 6-2, 6-1 win at fourth singles.

Notes

  • Zhou has now won 17 singles matches for the year and five straight, as well as five straight doubles matches with Taylor.
  • Van Cotthem and Venkatarama each lead the team with 18 singles victories.
