#11 Tartans End Home Slate With a Pair of Wins Over Allegheny and Duquesne

(PITTSBURGH, Pa.) – The 11th-ranked Carnegie Mellon University women's tennis hosted Allegheny College and Division I Duquesne University Sunday afternoon in preparation for the University Athletic Association (UAA) Championship next weekend. The Tartans blanked the Gators 9-0 to open play Sunday while topping the Dukes 7-2 and now have an overall dual match record of 17-4.

Inside the Results:

  • The Tartans earned three doubles points against Allegheny with the number two pair of freshmen Manuela Van Cotthem and Divya Venkatarama taking the third point with an 8-3 win.
  • Freshman Anna Chow claimed the Tartans first points of singles play against the Gators with a straight set victory at number six. Chow won by the scores of 6-1, 6-1.
  • Sophomore Sarah Yang sealed the win for the Tartans over Allegheny with a 6-0, 6-1 win at the top spot.
  • Against Duquesne, the tandem of Chow and sophomore Zoe Angell claimed the first point of the match with an 8-5 win at third doubles.
  • The Dukes then won at second doubles before the Tartans top tandem of junior Danna Taylor and sophomore Crystal Zhou gave the home team a 2-1 lead heading into singles play with an 8-7 (4) victory.
  • Yang won by retirement at first singles to make the score 3-1,
  • Van Cotthem won a straight set shutout match at four singles for the fourth team point and then Zhou sealed the team victory with a 6-2, 6-1 win at three singles.

Notes:

  • The win over Duquesne snaps the Tartans 10-match skid to the Dukes. The last win over Duquesne was a 7-2 decision on April 18, 2014.
  • It is just the fifth win over Duquesne in program history. The Dukes hold a 20-5 mark in the series.
  • The 17 wins for the Tartans is the most in a season since 2018-19 when the Cardinal and Gray weny 19-8.

Next Up

  • The Tartans will next travel to Altamonte Springs, Florida, for the UAA Championship with play set to begin on Thursday, April 20. The draw for the tournament will be released by Monday, April 17.
