#14 Tartans Continue NCAA Run with 5-0 Win in Second Round

(PITTSBURGH, Pa.) – The Carnegie Mellon University women's tennis team, ranked 14th, hosted North Central College in the second round of the 2023 NCAA Division III Women's Tennis Championship on Friday, May 5. The Tartans topped the Cardinals by a 5-0 score to advance to their sixth straight NCAA Championship third-round match.

How it Happened

  • Carnegie Mellon captured all three doubles points with the number one pair of junior Danna Taylor and sophomore Crystal Zhou finishing first with an 8-1 score. Sophomore Zoe Angell and freshman Anna Chow then won 8-3 at third doubles before the first-year combo of Manuela Van Cotthem and Divya Venkatarama pulled out an 8-6 win in the second position.
  • Van Cotthem was the first to finish singles action with a 6-0, 6-0 victory in the fourth position.
  • With the Tartans claiming the first set in all singles matches, they needed just one more victory to seal the team win.
  • Freshman Anika Joshi earned that match point with a 6-2, 6-1 score at sixth singles.

The Tartans will host the winner of #18 New York University and #32 Kenyon on Saturday, May 6 in the third round of the NCAA Championship at 12:00 p.m. The winner will advance to the finals site at the USTA National Campus in Orlando, Florida, with a match set for Sunday, May  14.
