Tartans Open UAA Championships

(PITTSBURGH, Pa.) - The Carnegie Mellon University women's track and field team began the University Athletic Association (UAA) Championships at home on Saturday, April 28 and earned 29 points after seven scored events.

Senior Aparna Alavilli (Hanover , N.H. / Hanover) raced to a second-place finish in the 10,000-meter run with a time of 36:27.48.

Senior Kiersten Chuc (Cupertino, Calif. / Monta Vista) earned six points with a third-place finish in the hammer throw. She threw the element 46.48 meters. The All-UAA performance was the second of her career in the hammer throw.

Sophomore Michelle Karabin (Ruffs Dale, Pa. / Greensburg Central Catholic) and senior Sarah Miholer (Stow, Ohio / Walsh Jesuit) each earned points for the Tartans in the pole vault. Karabin cleared 3.58 meters to place fifth while Miholer successfully made it over the bar at 3.48 meters to mark a career best and a seventh-place finish.

Junior Autumn Hair (Blue Bell, Pa. / Wissahickon) earned a sixth-place finish in the long jump when she achieved a mark of 5.21 meters. The mark was the best of her outdoor career.

Another sixth-place finish for the Tartans came from sophomore Emmalyn Lindsey (Eugene, Ore. / South Eugene) in the 3,000-meter steeplechase. Lindsey finished the race in 11:22.83.

Finally, the 4x800 meter relay team of sophomore Vayda Farino (Scottdale, Pa. / Southmoreland), freshman Isabelle Chickanosky (St. Louis, Mo. / St. Joseph's Academy), junior Wade Lacey (Albany, N.Y. / The Albany Academies), and sophomore Valerie Collins (Wellesley, Mass. / Wellesley) placed sixth in a time of 9:54.26.

The championship meet will continue on Sunday at 9:00 a.m. with field events and running starting at 11:30 a.m.
