Two School Records Set at First Day of UAA Championships

(ATLANTA, Ga.) - The Carnegie Mellon University women's track and field team set two school records on the first day of competition of the University Athletic Association (UAA) Outdoor Track and Field Championships on Saturday at Emory University. After seven scored events, the Tartans are sixth with 17 points.

The women's 4x800-meter team of junior Valerie Collins (Wellesley, Mass. / Wellesley), sophomore Madeline Evans (Pittsburgh, Pa. / North Hills), junior Kate Reilly (Scranton, Pa. / Scranton Prep) and senior Rose Ciriello (Madison, N.J. / Madison) set the school record with a second place performance of 9:19. The Tartan women broke the previous record of 9:22 which was set in 2015.

Senior Debarati Bhanja (New Albany, Ohio / New Albany) improved upon her school record in the 200-meter with a time of 25.45 placing third in the preliminaries. The senior also has the first seed after running a personal-best time of 57.84 in the 400 meter.

Sophomore Alessandra Tully (Chappaqua, N.Y. / Horace Greeley) set a personal record in the hammer throw with a toss of 36.42 meters. In the pole vault, junior Michelle Karabin (Ruffs Dale, Pa. / Greensburg Central Catholic) took fifth clearing 3.48 meters.

Junior Leah Kendrick (Doylestown, Pa. / Central Bucks East) placed third in the 100-meter hurdles preliminaries with a time of 15.15. Senior Claire Yuan (San Jose, Calif. / Lynbrook) placed eighth in the 100-meter preliminaries in a time of 12.96.

In the 400-meter hurdles junior Joanna Baranowski (Syosset, N.Y. / Syosset) set a personal-best performance of 1:05, the third-best time in school history.

Junior Abigail Levine (Bethesda, Md. / Bethesda Chevy Chase) placed seventh in the 10,000-meter run with a time of 38:04. Fellow junior Emmalyn Lindsey (Eugene, Ore. / South Eugene) placed eighth in the 3,000-meter steeplechase in a time of 12:20.

Action will continue on Sunday with four more field events and the finals of eight individual races and two relays.
