Tartans Split in First UAA Action of the Season

(NEW YORK, N.Y.) - The 21st-ranked Carnegie Mellon University volleyball team opened University Athletic Association (UAA) play with a win and a loss on Saturday, October 3 at New York University. The Tartans are now 19-3 on the year and 1-1 in UAA play.

Against Brandeis, the Tartans won 25-13, 25-15 and 25-19. The Tartans tallied 33 kills with junior Emily Newton (Manhattan Beach, Calif./Chadwick School) collecting 29 assists. Freshman Sarah Jurgens (Eagan, Minn./Eagan) led with eight kills while fellow freshman Lauren Mueller (Downingtown, Pa./Downingtown SIEM Academy) hit .556 with six kills. The Tartans were big at the net, with Jurgens and sophomore Eliza Donohue (Lancaster, Pa./Hempfield) each collecting three block assists, while junior Casey Salandra (Carol Steam, Ill./St. Francis) had one block solo and three block assists. Junior Molly Higgins (Vero Beach, Fla./Vero Beach) led the back line with 16 digs.

The Tartans battled Case Western Reserve in the second match of the day with the Spartans winning 25-22, 25-19 and 25-16. Dohonue led with eight kills while Jurgens picked up seven kills. Newton dished out 26 assists while Higgins collected 17 digs. Junior Jackie Gibbons (Evanston, Ill./Evanston Township) led at the net with two block assists.

On Sunday, the Tartans will face third-ranked Emory University at 12:00 p.m. to close out UAA play for the weekend.
