No. 14 Tartans Top Franciscan

(PITTSBURGH, Pa.) – The Carnegie Mellon University volleyball team, ranked 14th nationally, hosted Franciscan University Wednesday, September 14 and won 3-1 (25-18, 25-17, 23-25, 25-16).  The win improves the Tartans record to 8-1 while the Barons are now 2-8.

The match saw 19 Tartans enter the contest with sophomore Lauren Mueller (Downingtown, Pa./Downingtown STEM Academy) leading the offense with 13 kills while junior Eliza Donohue (Lancaster, Pa./Hempfield) totaled 10. Donohue recorded a hitting percentage of .476 with Mueller hitting .355.

Senior setter Emily Newton (Manhattan Beach, Calif./Chadwick School) led a trio of Tartans that recorded double-digit assist, as the senior handed out 17. Freshman Maia So-Holloway (Oakland, Calif./Sacred Heart Cathedral) collected 13 with sophomore Amanda Thiele (Lakeland, Fla./George Jenkins) tallying 11.

Defensively, junior Hannah Wooten (Hughson, Calif.) had 16 digs and Newton and Senior Molly Higgins (Vero Beach, Fla./Vero Beach) tallied 14 digs each totaled 11.

The Tartans return to the floor on Friday, September 16 at the Franklin & Marshall Scramble in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. Carnegie Mellon opens with Ithaca College at 2:00 p.m.
