Tartans Defeat Messiah, 3-1, in Home Invitational

(PITTSBURGH, Pa.) - The Carnegie Mellon University women's volleyball team hosted Messiah College on Friday, October 21 in its first match of a home mini invitational and defeated the Falcons, 3-1. The 21st-ranked Tartans are now 20-5 on the season while the Falcons dropped to 21-5.

Messiah took a closely contested set one by a 26-24 score before the Tartans rallied for 25-21, 25-20 and 25-15 wins to take the match.

Senior Jackie Gibbons (Evanston, Ill./Evanston Township) recorded 13 kills and six block assists for the match to lead the Tartans in points. Sophomore Lauren Mueller (Downingtown, Pa./Downingtown STEM Academy) put down 11 kills while freshman Sahara Aqui (Miramar, Fla./Archbishop McCarthy) picked up nine kills in two sets played. Senior Emily Newton (Manhattan Beach, Calif./Chadwick School) added 40 assists while senior Molly Higgins (Vero Beach, Fla./Vero Beach) led four players in double-digit digs with 22.

The Tartans will host Elizabethtown College and Rochester Institute of Technology on Saturday at 11 a.m. and 3 p.m., respectively, to close out their home season.
