Tartans Receive At-Large Bid to NCAA Championship

(INDIANAPOLIS, Ind.) - The Carnegie Mellon University volleyball team received an at-large bid to the 2016 NCAA Division III Women's Volleyball Championship on Monday afternoon, marking the fourth-ever appearance by the Tartans and third under 11-year head coach Kim Kelly.

The 21st-ranked Tartans (25-7) finished the regular season on Saturday, November 5 in the University Athletic Association (UAA) Championship match for the third time in school history. The Tartans reached the championship match by defeating the number one seed of the tournament in University of Chicago, 3-2. In the championship, the Tartans fell to eighth-ranked Emory University, 3-0, to place second.

Carnegie Mellon will face DePauw University on Thursday, November 10 at Calvin College in Grand Rapids, Mich., at a time to be determined Tuesday. DePauw (23-5) finished second in the North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) regular season and conference tournament.

The winner between the Tartans and Tigers will face the winner of Pitt-Bradford (25-5) and No. 1 Calvin (27-1) on Friday, November 11. Calvin will be making its 26th NCAA tournament appearance and have played for the national championship on four occasions, including winning it in 2013 and 2010 with a second-place finish in 2012.
