Tartans Earn AVCA Team Academic Award

(LEXINGTON, Ky.) – The 2016 Carnegie Mellon University volleyball program has been recognized by the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) for its performance in the classroom by being named a recipient of the AVCA Team Academic Award.

The award, which was initiated in the 1992-93 academic year, honors teams that displayed excellence in the classroom during the school year by maintaining at least a 3.30 cumulative team grade-point average on a 4.0 scale. The Tartans finished the year with a team GPA of 3.45.

Under the direction of head coach Kim Kelly, the Tartans recorded 25 wins for the second consecutive season and earned a berth to the NCAA Division III Volleyball Championship for the second time in four years. Additionally, Carnegie Mellon finished second in the University Athletic Association for the third time in program history and was ranked as high as 14th nationally during the year.

Contributing to the 3.45 GPA for the Tartans was three student-athletes whom earned a 4.0 during the playing season while two accomplished the feat in the spring.

A total of 485 programs hailing from the three divisions of the NCAA, the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics and the National Junior College Athletic Association were represented on the All-Academic Team.  There were 150 D-III teams who made their way on the list.
