Tartans Open Play at CMU DoubleTree Invitational With a Pair of Wins

(PITTSBURGH, Pa.) – The Carnegie Mellon University women's volleyball team opened the CMU DoubleTree Invitational on Friday with two wins. The Tartans started the night with a 3-0 win against Marietta College before topping Kean University, 3-0. The Tartans are now 9-5 on the season.

The Tartans defeated the Pioneers by the scores of 25-16, 25-16 and 25-19 while hitting .418 as a team. Senior Sarah Jurgens (Eagan, Minn./Eagan) hit .727 with eight kills, as classmate Lauren Mueller (Downingtown, Pa./Downingtown SIEM Academy) led the Cardinal and Gray with 10 kills and hit .450.

Senior Lizzy Thrasher (Rochester, N.Y./Gates Chili) and junior Erika Foose (Allentown, Pa./Parkland) tabbed six and five kills, respectively, with Foose hitting .571 and Thrasher .500. Junior Maia So-Holloway (Oakland, Calif./Sacred Heart Cathedral) handed out 34 assists.

At the net, junior Sahara Aqui (Miramar, Fla./Archbishop McCarthy) led with three block assists while Jurgens and So-Holloway each had two. Junior Kayla Yew (San Francisco, Calif./Sacred Heart Cathedral) recorded 11 digs in the win over Marietta.

In the nightcap, Carnegie Mellon took down Kean by the scores of 25-20, 25-21 and 25-17. Jurgens and Foose led the Tartans with nine kills apiece while Foose hit .412. Mueller added eight kills for the home team along with four service aces. So-Holloway ended the night with 25 assists.

Defensively, Yes recorded 18 digs and So-Holloway had 11. Aqui and Mueller each had three block assists with Foose having two.

The Tartans return to action on Saturday, against the University of Mount Union and University of Mary Washington. Play begins at 11:00 a.m.
