This Week in Tartans History - April 12-18, 2019

With our 2020 seasons cut short, we are honoring our spring athletes with a look back at their many accomplishments during their time as Tartans. We hope you enjoy celebrating these past performances.

Women’s Golf

The women’s golf team played in the Birmingham Southern College Southern Shootout and placed third of 10 teams with a 36-hole score of 624 (315-309). The two-day event was played on the par 72, 5,802-yard Bent Brook Golf Course in Bessemer, Alabama. The Tartans were led by back-to-back rounds of four-over par 76 by Charlotte Simpson, who placed second individually in a field of 61 golfers with a 36-hole score of 152.

 

Women’s Track and Field

The women’s track and field team competed at three different unscored team events throughout the week. The team began competition at the Westminster College Invitational with the field comprised of Division II and III athletes.

Highlights of the meet include:

  • Valerie Reiling placing third in the 400-meter run
  • Parvathi Meyyappan finishing third in the 5,000-meter run
  • Taylor Jacobs placing eighth in the 800-meter run

The Tartans sent four athletes to the two-day Bucknell Bison Outdoor Classic with the field comprised of Division I, II and III athletes.

Highlights of the meet include:

  • Abigail Levine setting a personal-best time in the 5000-meter run, a top 5 performance in school history

The Tartans also competed at the midweek Slippery Rock University Open where seven top finishes were recorded in the field comprised of Division II and III athletes.

Highlights of the meet include:

  • Michelle Karabin placing third in the pole vault
  • Lindy Cornwall finishing third in the discus
  • Sami Johnson placing fourth in the long jump
  • Valerie Collins finishing fourth in the 800-meter run and Taylor Jacobs taking sixth
  • Reiling placing fifth in the 400-meter run

 

Men’s Track and Field

The men’s track and field team competed at three different unscored team events throughout the week. The team began competition at the Westminster College Invitational with the field comprised of Division II and III athletes.

Highlights of the meet include:

  • Harry Branch-Shaw winning the steeplechase with Aiden O’Donnell placing third
  • Fred Dauphin taking second in the triple jump with Matt Sloan placing fifth
  • Jack Murphy tying for third in the pole vault
  • Marvin Bennett Jr. finishing second in the 100-meter dash and third in the 200-meter dash
  • Edward Goebel placing fourth in the 5,000-meter run
  • Tyler Waters finishing fourth in the 400-meter hurdles
  • The Tartans 4x400-meter team of Heoseph Desir, Waters, Grant Johnson and Michael Cai

  • Liam Walsh finishing sixth with a career-best time in the unseeded 1,500-meter run
  • Evan Yukevich running to a season-best time in the seeded 1,500-meter run
  • Graham Eversden finishing 13th with a career-best time in the 800-meter race
  • Hunter Hartshorne finishing 14th in the steeplechase, a top 5 performance in school history
  • Bram Miller placing seventh in the shot put and 11th in the discus

The Tartans also competed at the midweek Slippery Rock University Open where seven top finishes were recorded in the field comprised of Division II and III athletes

Highlights of the meet include:

  • Marvin Bennett Jr. finishing first in the 200-meter dash
  • Aidan O’Donnell placing first in the steeplechase
  • Bram Miller winning the discus and shot put
  • Logan Stahl placing second in the hammer throw
  • Michael Cai finishing second in the 400-meter run

 

Women’s Tennis

The women’s tennis team, then ranked 10th nationally, hosted the Blue Streaks of John Carroll University and won 9-0 marking the Tartans third shutout win of the season. Courtney Ollis and Vinaya Rao started the scoring with an 8-2 victory at first doubles followed by an 8-4 win at third doubles by Janabelle Wu and Beata Liberchuk. Danna Taylor and Victoria Chang completed the sweep in doubles with an 8-4 win at the second spot. Taylor then sealed the match for the Cardinal and Gray with a straight set victory at first singles, winning 6-3, 6-3.

 

Softball

The Tartans officially played their first games at their home field, UPMC All American Park, while they took game three of a four-game set against University Athletic Association foe Washington University in St. Louis. Later in the week the Tartans dropped a double-header at Geneva College.

In the Tartans 5-3 win over WashU, Gwen Delacruz recorded her third win of the season after pitching a complete game, allowing eight hits, just one extra base hit, and one walk. Emily Song scattered three hits. Piper Johnson went 2-of-3 at the plate with a double and a triple and knocked in three runs. For the six-game stretch, Song belted eight hits and stole four bases.
