Plaidvocates Host Regional Social

(PITTSBURGH, Pa.) – On March 24, 2019, a group of more than thirty student-athletes came together to converse on the topic of how their upbringing in different regions of the United States and international regions have affected their reflections and experiences at CMU. This Regional Social was hosted by the Plaidvocates in the Skibo Conference Room. The purpose of this event was to generate richer discourse on regional impact, as well as to bring athletes together by a commonality besides their sport of choice.

Representation spanned from multiple teams including men’s soccer, women’s tennis, swimming and diving, and track and field, to name a few. The event started with a color-coded pinning of individuals’ hometowns in accordance to their region which slowly grew into conversations on regional slang. Is using “pop” instead of “soda” a midwestern thing? Why do West-coasters not understand anything anyone else in America says? Though these topics clearly stimulate a mass of energy, discussions ultimately targeted the broader topic of determining the best characteristics of each region from personal perspectives.

With momentum built up from the first Regional Social last winter, the Plaidvocates plan on using this new network of student-athletes to plan a more ambitious event at the end of the year, a regional feast. Keep your eyes peeled for some hand-picked catering this spring, brought to you by the Plaidvocates!
