Holmes Named UAA Sophomore Rookie of the Year and Garners Second Team Accolades

(ROCHESTER, N.Y.) – Sophomore R.J. Holmes (Buffalo Grove, Ill./Adlai Stevenson) of the Carnegie Mellon University men's basketball team was named the University Athletic Association (UAA) Men's Basketball Sophomore Rookie of the Year as well as landing a spot on the Association Second Team. Due to the UAA season being canceled last year, the league awarded both a freshman and sophomore rookie of the year for the 2021-22 season.

Holmes appeared and started in 23 games this season for the Tartans, as he led the team averaging 15.9 points and 8.6 rebounds per contest while shooting 56.7%. He also led the UAA with 1.43 blocks per contest. The sophomore recorded 10 double-doubles this season which ranked second in the UAA.

In 10 of the 14 UAA contests and in 17 total games, he scored in double figures. Holmes registered eight games scoring 20 points or more including tying the 64-year school record with 43 points against La Roche on November 10th. The 6-foot-7-inch forward also tabbed 11 double-digit rebound games and had a career-high 13 against Washington & Jefferson.
