Tartans End Road Trip With 84-75 Loss to Chicago

(CHICAGO, Ill.) – The Carnegie Mellon University men's basketball team ended its four-game University Athletic Association (UAA) road trip with an 84-75 loss to the Maroons of the University of Chicago on Sunday afternoon.

How it Happened

  • The Tartans jumped out to a 7-4 lead following three-point bucket by sophomore Justin Allen.
  • Over the next two minutes, the Maroons used a 10-0 run and led 14-7 with 13:40 to play in the first half.
  • With 11:18 to play, a layup by senior Jack Stone ended a 10-2 run that gave Carnegie Mellon the lead back at 17-16.
  • On the ensuing possession down the hardwood, Chicago's Phillip Lawrence hit a jump back shot that started a streak of 13 straight points for the Maroons who then took a 42-33 lead into the break.
  • Midway through the second half, Carnegie Mellon used a 15-4 run over a stretch of six minutes and grabbed a 63-59 lead with 6:45 to play in regulation. During the run, the Tartans connected of 3-of-4 from behind the arc.
  • Chicago countered the Tartans run with a 15-2 spirt over the next three minutes and led 74-65 with 3:33 showing on the clock.
  •  The Maroons held the lead the rest of the way and went for an 84-75 victory.

Tartan Stats

  • The Tartans shot 41.8% from the floor while connecting on 8-of-22 for 36.4% from behind the arc.
  • Allen led the Cardinal and Gray with 20 points, as he converted 7-of-11 from the field and was perfect at the foul line making all five of his attempts.
  • Four other Tartans scored in double figures in the setback. Stone ended with 14, sophomore Buckley DeJardin had 13 while senior R.J. Holmes and junior Aidan Murphy each had 12 points.

Maroon Stats

  • The Maroons shot 48.5% from the floor and connected on 10-of-29 for 34.5% from long range.
  • Chicago was led by Thomas Kurowski with a game-high 25 points. Joe Berry ended with 23 and Bryce Hopkins scored 12.

Game Notes

  • It was Allen's second straight game scoring 20 or more points and third in the last four games. He now has scored 20 or more in 10 contests this season.
  • Holmes has 959 career points. He needs 41 points to become the 21st Tartan to reach 1,000 points for their career.
