Tartans Can't Match Hot Shooting by UChicago, Drop UAA Contest

(PITTSBURGH, Pa.) - The Carnegie Mellon University men's basketball team hosted the University of Chicago for an afternoon contest on Sunday, February 4, and dropped a 99-69 decision to fall to 4-5 in the University Athletic Association (UAA). The Maroons, who are receiving votes in the D3hoops.com Top 25, advance to 5-4 in league play.

How It Happened

  • Senior Jack Stone hit a three-pointer from the top of the key to tie the score at 22-22 with 11:21 to go in the first half.
  • During the first eight-plus minutes of the game, the Tartans shot 71.4% from the field while the Maroons countered with 64.3% shooting.
  • The Maroons shooting continued while the Tartans went cold for nearly three minutes as the visitors built an 11-point lead.
  • The Tartans twice pulled the deficit to six points but after the second time following a layup by sophomore Justin Allen with 3:30 to go, the Maroons hit three straight long-range shots to lead by 15 with 1:54 left on the first half clock.
  • The Maroons pushed the lead to 19 with six straight points in the paint to close the last minute.
  • By halftime, the Tartans were shooting 53.1% from the floor to 59.0% by the Maroons, who were 7-of-14 from three and grabbed eight offensive rebounds to tally 17 second-chance points.
  • The Tartans held the Maroons to just two free throws for the first 2:37 of the second half to trail 58-43 but the visitors answered with four straight buckets to lead by 23 a minute and 15 seconds later.
  • UChicago would go on to shoot 50.0% for the half and lead by no less than 19 points as the Tartans shot 30.6% from the field and couldn't overcome the shots from behind the arc by the Maroons.

For the Tartans

  • Allen led the team with 22 points on 9-of-16 shooting.
  • Senior Jack Stone scored 12 points off the bench and made two of the team's five three-pointers.
  • Junior Nolan Casey contributed seven points and led the team with four assists. And six rebounds.

For the Maroons

  • Thomas Kurowski drilled 6-of-9 from long range and led with 27 points.
  • Eamonn Kenah scored 16 points, and Arrish Bhandal had 13 points and eight rebounds.
  • Joe Berry finished with 12 points and Phillip Lawrence led the bench with 11 points.
