Deshpande Wins 50 Free, Tartans Set Four School Records at UAA Championships

(CHICAGO, Ill.) – The Carnegie Mellon University men's swimming and diving team began the University Athletic Association (UAA) Swimming and Diving Championships with four school records and a UAA Champion after one relay event on Wednesday, February 14 and a full set of events on Thursday, February 15. The Tartans are currently in fourth place with 454 points.

Top Performances

  • The 800-yard freestyle relay finished fourth in a time of 6:38.18 behind the swims from senior Santiago Gomez, freshman Brayden Morford, freshman Richard Chung, and graduate student Willem Goedecke.
  • The 200-yard freestyle relay opened Friday night with a near victory, touching one one-hundredths of a second after NYU. The time of 1:19.79 was achieved by Morford, graduate student Aleksander Tarczynski, sophomore Arnav Deshpande, and sophomore DJ Lloyd.
  • Gomez was the top finisher for the Tartans in the 500-yard freestyle, finishing 14th overall in 4:34.46 with Goedecke next in 15th place in 4:35.88.
  • Morford continued his first championship meet with a fourth-place finish in the 200-yard IM with a career-best time of 1:47.67.
  • Deshpande earned his first UAA gold medal by touching first in the 50-yard freestyle in a time of 20.04 seconds. He dropped .36 seconds off his previous-best time and set a UChicago pool record.
  • Lloyd earned top-heat points for the Tartans by placing seventh in the 50-yard freestyle in 20.50 seconds.
  • The 400-yard medley relay closed the evening with a third-place finish to earn All-UAA status. The relay of Morford, junior Christian Lanuza, Tarczynski, and Deshpande touched in 3:13.22 as the top three finishes in the event all topped the UAA record set in 2022.
  • Senior Tyler Hoyt scored a career-best 432.10 points on the 3-meter diving board to place fifth with junior Jonathan Lindstrom earning 423.60 points to place sixth.
