#35 Tartans Win 7-2 at #18 Mary Washington

(FREDERICKSBURG, Va.) – The Carnegie Mellon University men's tennis team, ranked 35th in Division III, traveled to 18th-ranked University of Mary Washington on Saturday and won 7-2. The Tartan dual record is now 6-7 while the Eagles move to 10-4.

How it Happened:

  • The Tartans led 2-1 following doubles play collecting wins at the second and third spots. The second doubles team of senior Derek Wong and sophomore Akshay Joshi claimed an 8-3 win while the third doubles tandem of seniors Nicholas Wernink and Nadim Motaghedi won 8-5.
  • After the Eagles knotted the score at 2-all, Wernink won 6-2, 7-6 (2) at four singles to give the Tartans a 3-2 advantage.
  • Freshman Daniel Kong then gave the Tartans a 4-2 lead with a 6-4, 6-4 win at third singles.
  • The Cardinal and Gray sealed the match when freshmen Raghav Jangbahadur won 6-2, 0-6, 6-4 at first singles to make the score 5-2.
  • Also winning for the Tartans were freshman Jonathan Gu at six singles and Motaghedi in the second slot.
