#27 Tartans End UAA Championship Tournament in Fifth

(ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, Fla.) - The 27th-ranked Carnegie Mellon University men's tennis team played New York University in the fifth-place match of the University Athletic Association (UAA) Championship on Saturday in Altamonte Springs, Florida. The Tartans won a thriller by the score of 5-4 and end the season with a mark of 8-10 while the NYU is now 4-10.

How it Happened:

  • NYU won two of three in doubles play with the Tartan win coming at the three spot by the tandem of senior Nicholas Wernink and freshman Theodore Gershon by the score of 8-7 (7).
  • Wernink then won at third singles b the scores of 6-3, 6-0 to knot the score at 2-all.
  • NYU then won at first and second before freshman Jonathan Gu won a three-set match at five singles by the scores of 6-3, 2-6, 6-2, making the score 4-3.
  • Sophomore Akshay Joshi tied the score at 4-all with a three-set, 4-6, 7-6 (6), 6-2, victory at six singles.
  • The match came down to third singles, as senor Nadim Motaghedi dropped set one 7-5 before forcing a third set after wining 6-4 in the second. The senior trailed 5-2 in the third set and then took the next five games to seal the victory for the Cardinal and Gray.
