Jangbahadur Named UAA Rookie of the Year; Four Others Receive UAA Honors

(ROCHESTER, N.Y.) – Five Carnegie Mellon University men's tennis players were honored by the University Athletic Association (UAA) coaches on Thursday with recognition on the 2024 UAA Men's Tennis All-Association Team with freshman Raghav Jangbahadur receiving UAA Men's Tennis Rookie of the Year accolades. Joining Jangbahadur on the team is senior Nicholas Wernink, freshman Daniel Kong, senior Derek Wong, and sophomore Akshay Joshi.

Jangbahadur has accumulated an 18-9 singles record and won the ITA Southeast Regional in the fall. While at the ITA Cup, the first-year Tartan won his opening match before falling to last year's NCAA runner-up. Jangbahadur was also named to the UAA first team at first singles.

Wernink was selected to the second team at fourth singles and finished the year with a singles mark of 14-8. He was 8-7 during dual matches at fourth singles and won two of his matches during the UAA Championships while leaving his match against 27th-ranked WashU unfinished.

Jangbahadur and Kong were selected to the second team at first doubles. The duo finished the year with a 13-15 doubles record. The first-year duo won the ITA Southeast Regional and won two matches on the national stage at the ITA Cup in the fall.

Kong was also honored as honorable mention at second singles with Wong and Joshi earning honorable mention at second doubles. Kong's singles play netted him a 15-12 record with a 5-6 mark at second singles. Wong and Joshi won two of three matches at the UAA Championship and finished the year with a 15-8 record and 10-7 mark at second doubles in dual matches.

Jangbahadur is the first UAA Rookie of the Year since 2005 when Andrew Clearfield earned the honor. The award was first handed out following the 2001 season.
