Tartans Compete in Doubleheader Against Brandeis

(FOX CHAPEL, Pa.) – The Carnegie Mellon University softball team played a doubleheader against Brandeis University at Shady Side Academy Senior School on Saturday, April 6. The Tartans, playing in pink jerseys to bring awareness to breast cancer and early screening, dropped a 4-0 decision in game one and an 8-2 decision in game two. The Tarans are now 8-10 and 2-4 in the University Athletic Association (UAA) while the Judges are 8-9 and 4-2.

Game 1

  • Brandeis immediately scored two runs in the top of the first inning, followed by one in the fourth and one in the sixth.
  • Both senior Kiera Boucher and sophomore Kyr Brenneman picked up two hits each. Both of Boucher's hits were on bunts while Brenneman had a single and a double.
  • Sophomore Kira Monji had two stolen bases in the game.
  • Senior Amanda Smith pitched all seven innings, collecting seven strikeouts while allowing four hits.
  • The Tartans stranded nine runners on base.

Game 2

  • In the bottom of the first, sophomore Maya Goodwin singled to left field, allowing sophomore Kira Monji to score from second base with two outs. The run gave the Tartans a 1-0 lead.
  • Brandeis answered with three runs in the top of the third inning off two home runs.
  • In the bottom of the third, Boucher homered to left field to make it 3-2 in favor of Brandeis.
  • Four runs by the Judges in the top of the fourth inning extended the visitor's advantage.
  • The Judges added a run in the top of the fifth inning and kept all but one batter for the Tartans off the bases for the remainder of the game.

Notes

  • Boucher recorded her 100th career hit in game one and is the fourth player in CMU history to reach 100 hits.
