Timely Hitting Leads Tartans to Sweep of Brandeis to Close the Season Series

(FOX CHAPEL, Pa.) – The Carnegie Mellon University softball team played a second doubleheader against Brandeis University at Shady Side Academy Senior School on Saturday, April 6. The Tartans delivered a crushing defeat to the Judges, winning 8-6 in game one and 13-7 in game two. The Tartans are now 10-10 and 4-4 in the University Athletic Association (UAA) while the judges are 8-11 and 4-4.

Inside the Box Score for Game One:

  • In the bottom of the first, sophomore Maya Goodwin grounded out to shortstop with runners on second and third, allowing sophomore Kira Monji to advance to third and senior Kiera Boucher to score.
  • The Judges then scored 6 unanswered runs over the course of the next five innings.
  • The Tartans answered back with seven runs in the bottom of the sixth with two outs beginning with freshman Maya Bala stealing home.
  • Junior Abby Reese then scored on an RBI double off the bat of junior Libby Eichberger.
  • Eichberger then scored after Monji singled to the left center.
  • Monji and senior Kiera Boucher scored after freshman Maddy Beall doubled down the right field line.
  • Goodwin hit a game-winning home run with two strikes when she lasered the ball over the center field fence.
  • Sophomore Grace Fujino earned the win after entering the game in the sixth inning.

Inside the Box Score for Game Two:

  • The Judges opened the game strong with two runs in the top of the first inning off a two-run home run by Haley Nash.
  • With two outs in the bottom of the first inning, Goodwin launched another home run, this time to left field, to even the score at 2-2 as Boucher scored after reaching on a hit by pitch to start the inning.
  • The Tartans then scored six runs in the bottom of the third inning off three home runs: one by Boucher to start the inning, one by junior Abbey Reese with two runners on, and a solo shot by freshman Alison Li.
  • Brandeis cut into the 8-2 deficit with four runs in the top of the fourth inning but the Tartans answered right back with two more home runs. Freshman Maddy Beall homered to right center to plate Monji who reached on a bunt single to the pitcher. Then Reese homered for the second straight at bat and scored Goodwin who walked.
  • Each team recorded a run in the fifth inning with the Tartans' coming off the bat of Monji who singled up the middle to plate Boucher from second.
  • Senior Amanda Smith relieved Fujino in the top of the sixth inning after Fujino pitched three solid innings to record the win. Smith recorded the side in the sixth inning and then stranded three runners in the seventh with the final out a line drive snagged by freshman Lindsay Murai at third base.

  • Li recorded her first career home run.
  • The six home runs by the Tartans in game two set a new UAA record.
  • The eight total home runs in game two set a new UAA record for home runs by two teams.
  • Reese tied the single-game record for home runs in a game with Izzy Bermudez from 2022 and junior Faith Lawrence from 2022.
